Through my paintings of abstract landscape I explore the possibilities of the spaces in which we live. I map new versions of real exteriors by compiling my photographic references into a collage during my sketching and planning phase. The photo-collaging process allows me to explore selected areas of these lands, from different viewpoints and at my leisure. Beyond this, my paintings are driven by the composition of distinct and imaginative shapes. While these shapes carve out the spaces, neutral and vibrant colors collide, forming a tension in these new worlds. My mark making is a hybrid of both the painted and drawn gesture using oil paint and oil pastels. The work shifts in scale in both the size of my work surface as well as the varying vantage point I allow for both my viewers and myself.
